GE, Amazon Bring Voice Control to Connected Kitchen

Voice control is coming to GE’s lineup of connected, Wi-Fi enabled appliances through a new partnership with Amazon’s Alexa.

This partnership enables users of the Amazon Echo, Echo Tap or Echo Dot to use voice commands to control any Wi-Fi connected GE or Monogram refrigerator, water heater washer, dryer or dishwasher. “Integrating our connected appliances with Alexa will help make consumers’ lives easier, more productive and a little more fun,” says Liz VerSchure, VP of service and consumer comfort at GE.

GE has named its voice control program Geneva, so Alexa commands must include that name to relay the command. One example is, “Alexa, tell Geneva to preheat the oven to 350 degrees,” or “Alexa, ask Geneva if my laundry is clean.”

GE Appliances is also the first major manufacturer to use an Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) to control a broad range of kitchen appliances. There are currently 39 voice commands, the full list can be found here.

Amazon launched ASK along with Alexa Voice Service (AVS), last year. These two services allow developers to build new Alexa skills or integrate Alexa directly into their products.

GE plans to add more voice control features in the future. It also intends to incorporate Geneva into additional appliances that don’t have it, right now, starting with its line of connected air conditioners.
