SmartThings Business Smarts

Here’s another reason why SmartThings is so smart, they hired a former Google executive as chief platform officer to lead its developer platform in the journey towards a unified smart home platform.

Dora Hsu, who was the senior director of Google Cloud Solutions, now has the task of convincing developers to integrate their devices into the SmartThings ecosystem. According to Gigaom.com, being the go-to open platform continues to be a huge goal of Samsung president BK Yoon, who recently purchased SmartThings. Some companies are, however, skeptical. The company is hoping that Hsu’s experience will turn that around, so that SmartThings can back more than the 150-plus devices it already supports.

Our homes have more and more connected devices - PCs, phones, TVs, entertainment systems, cameras and lights to name a few. And, in the future, they may all behave just the way we like, programmed to our family preferences and regular activities, such as knowing when the kids enter the front door after school, or the dog needs to be walked. Intel on the Connected Home

If Intel has anything to do with it, the computing company is going to advance the connected home through its acquisition of Lantiq, a supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies.

With the transaction scheduled to close in about 90 days, Intel already has big plans to expand its offerings to gateway markets. Senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Client Computing Group, Kirk Skaugen, expects more than 800 million broadband connected households worldwide within three years. This means more opportunities to bring connected home experiences to consumers.

It looks like we’ll have to wait until 2018 to see what exactly those experiences will be.

Content is King

While sales of 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) televisions continue to soar, the industry needs to pull together for real growth.

According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), at least a third of consumers expect to buy a new UHD television within the next three years. The only thing that is missing is the quantity of content. Companies like Sony, Netflix, DirecTV and Comcast offered are working on this. For example, Comcast will provide UHD set-top boxes later this year while Netflix is making enhancements to pixels and will shoot its original content in UHD. These companies are also part of a new group called the Ultra HD Alliance, which has the goal of creating open standards and spur growth in the UHD market.
