Nortek Security & Control has unveiled a new connected product that takes aim at the smart doorbell market currently dominated by Ring and Skybell.
The product will be available exclusively to authorized Nortek dealers and integrators over the next couple of weeks. That announcement was made at CEDIA 2016.
This new camera falls under Nortek’s GoControl product line. The GoControl line is comprised of devices that couple home automation with security control. There are around 20 smart home devices, ranging from connected lights to smart fans, in this product line.
Nortek’s new camera is called the GoControl Smart Doorbell Camera and it’s been designed and rated for constant outdoor use.
The camera scored next-to-perfect on the IP Scale (65 out of 68), which is used to measure a device’s resistance to water and dust intrusion. An increased resistance to water and dust helps improve lifespan and security.
According to the press release, the hard-wired installation and the weather-resistant design results in longer Wi-Fi range and advanced night-time illumination. With that said, the GoControl smart doorbell system is Wi-Fi enabled and features two-way audio control that allows the homeowner to communicate with someone at the door and vice-versa.
The system is hardwired using hermetically-sealed connectors in an attempt to eliminate service calls due to dust and weather permeating into the wires. It also uses the same two-wire installation of a traditional doorbell. In a retrofit, this enables the new camera to draw power from the same transformer as the previous doorbell, so you don’t have to rewire the area.
Lastly, builders take note, in addition to receiving notifications directly on a smartphone or home automation platform, the new doorbell can be directly integrated with a door chime to provide a second layer of monitoring control over the front door.
