WHEN did home automation and security begin?

Innovations surrounding home automation, security and the “smart home” concept began as early as the 1970s and 1980s, while the idea of “automated” home devices was arguably initiated through early 20th century labor-saving machines such as the invention of the washing machine in 1904.
