4. Univ. of Texas at Austin and Germany’s Technische Universitat Munchen

The University of Texas at Austin and Germany’s Technische Universitat Munchen teamed up to create the NexusHaus. It’s a net-zero design that took fourth place.

Water conservation is a big theme. A rainwater catchment system supplies all the potable water needs. Two small solar panels keep water flowing to the plants, while 24 solar panels generate all the power needs for this home.

A student-built monitoring system was designed to monitor all aspects of the NexusHaus, including entertainment, security and energy use.
